Fast, Nice, Usable and... ahm Fast? Try the new Telerik Online Help

Hello,

It’s a great day for Telerik online help today. It was back in 2004 when we first published the online version of RadControls manuals. Since then we are always keeping the most current version of the documentation online. Naturally, as RadControls evolve in features and new suites one could expect the documentation improvements to follow them. Here I don’t mean the corrections and additions that we do on a daily basis, but rather a real revolution in the online help. That’s what we did today when we launched the first version of our Help Application.

As you might have expected, we are using Telerik RadControls and latest .NET Framework 3.5. In the new application, you will find:

  • Frames replaced by resizable panes
We’re finally out of the 90s. The previous help version used frames to display the navigation and topic content and killed the search bots.
Tip: Double-click the splitter to show/hide the navigation tree.
  • Auto-locate of the current topic
Very handy feature if you click on a help link given in a forum post - the new Help application will automatically expand the navigation tree and focus the currently opened topic.
  • Load-on-demand for the navigation tree
Children nodes are loaded only when you expand the parent, which speeds up the application to 3rd space gear.
  • Better search
The search will work in the scope of the help files by using Google-based search engine. This will give you more concrete results to your queries.
    Note:
It might take a day to have all help files indexed by the search engine, so please be patient, it is worth it!

I should say here that this is the initial version of the app. We have plans for adding more improvements and optimizations in the near future. I’ll keep blogging on that.

Needless to say that we made the application for you and since it is now live, we would be very glad to hear your thoughts.

Looks great and the search seems to be specific to the topic you are viewing. If I could make a suggestion. At the top add a drop down or some method where you can switch to a different control quickly. For instance I was viewing the RAD Grid in the new help system. It would be cool if I could click on the text "RadGrid for ASP.NET" and it would reveal a dropdown of all the available online help topics like RAD Chart or RAD Input, ect.... Just someway to navigate to the other topics without having to return to the list page.

Very nice! You used Innovasys before - what do you use now?

Wow, that is nice! I hope you show the MSDN folks that!

@Brian Boatright Thanks for the suggestion. We are thinking of merging all control trees in one big ASP.NET Controls tree. I think this should fit your scenario. @Anders M. Same. We're just doing some processing of their input and import it in our application. @Colin Bowern Thanks Colin, we certainly will, but not before making the planned improvements and features. We're on top gear, guys... soon you'll see more...

This is a huge improvement for something that I use frequently. I have two very minor suggestions. First, I know you guys are proud of your stuff (and you should be), but please keep the marketing people away from this and look at the overall UI in terms of usability. The 80 or so pixels across the entire top of the page just for the name of the current product suite is a tad wasteful. The most important information on the page is the actual documentation. Second, the page title ought to reflect the entire tree that lead to the topic and not just the topic. For example, "Toolbar Modes" could perhaps be "Toolbar Modes (Controls -> RadEditor)" or something like that so that when somebody is directed from another page the entire page puts them into a context. Keep up the great work!
