Tweaking the Theme colors for Telerik Silverlight Controls

Its been a while since my last blog post. But this is all�for good. It was a busy month for the Telerik Silverlight Team. We did a couple of public releases in the last few weeks. Our last release was yesterday - if you still haven't saw it - do this now -�we shipped the missing "5th element" of the suite�- the GridView control for Silverlight. Our next release will be in the middle of December when we will release our next�essential control - the Docking Manager�for Silverlight.

Now back on the topic. One of the major improvements in latest release of�the Telerik Silverlight suite is the theming engine. We did a refactoring for all the control themes with�one main goal in mind - to give you a suite that can be re-skinned with different colors in just a matter of minutes. By using this new approach we did 6 color variations of our default skin in less that 2 days - including all the tweaks and polishing work from our User Experience team! And ofcourse this was done for all the controls in the suite at once.

So how this all works?. It is very simple. We have a shared list of resources (brushes, styles, colors)�that are used across all the control templates. When you modify the resources from that list�- the change is automatically applied to all the controls. All you need to do is open the xaml file in Expression Blend and play a bit with the color pickers to achieve the desired color for your application :).�

This is�not all.�To ease you even more, we also�prepared�styles for the most commonly used Silverlight framework controls -�ScrollViewer, RadioButton, CheckBox, ListBox and�for the default�Button control. This way you will not need to bother skinning them to look exactly as our Telerik controls. You will�get the entire application skinned out of the box by using the Telerik themes!

I've also prepared a solution�that will�give you a quick start for creating�your custom theme. (Download).�The solution contains two projects. One�is for the Custom Telerik theme, and the other is a Simple Silverlight application�that uses that custom theme.�Here are the steps that needs to done in order to create a custom styled theme:

1. Open the solution in Expression Blend.

2. Open the Common.xaml�file��from the Themes folder of the "MyCustomTheme" project.�

3. Edit the brushes you need.

4. Compile and run the solution to see your new theme.

We are planning even more enhancements on the Theming mechanism and I will be glad to know what is your opinion about what has been done so far.

Silverlight session recordings not to miss from the PDC

The update is now available for download from your client.net account.

Context Menu for Silverlight. Integration with RadTreeView

Here at Telerik we are cooking a lot of things with Silverlight.�You will see some great new (and big!) controls with our Q3 release that is�already knocking on the door.

One small, but very�popular thing, that is missing�in�Silverlight2 these days is the Context Menu support. As we got this working already internally, I thought that I'll share the good�news�with you :)

This image above�shows�the integration between the new RadContextMenu and RadTreeView. As you can see you have full control over the context menu content, and�you can also control the shortcut keys that will open the menu.

So, any comments about that?

Loading Images in Silverlight2 Applications

One question we receive very often from our customers, is how to load an image, from�different relative folders in Silverlight. This is a little bit tricky and it is different from the way it is working in HTML.

Silverlight2 RC0 is out!

Rad Controls For Silverlight update is coming too.

Today Scott Guthrie announced the availability of the Release Candidate 0 of Microsoft Silverlight2 plugin. Read His post here.

A full coverage of what has been changed since the beta2 release is available on the Ashish Shetty blog.

For me one of the biggest changes is the availability of the SnapsToDevicePixels�property�.
Now our Silverlight applications will not look blurry anymore. Awesome!

�

The other important�update for us are the improvements�on the�Accessibility and UI automation. We know how important the accessibility is for you - so, the news here is that all our controls will implement the UI automation and Accessibility interfaces for our Q3 release ( targeted for the begining of November ).

�

When will the RadControls for Silverlight get compatibility update to work with this RC?
We have been working closely with Microsoft Silverlight team on this RC release, and we are happy to tell you that we are�pretty close on clearing all the issues and�finalizing all new features.
We will be able to release an update at the beggining of next week, so you will have enough time to play with the new plugin and our controls until the official Silverlight2 release.

�

Wait - there is more! Telerik Silverlight release next week will include not only compatibility updates, but also two very important frameworks - Page Navigation and Drag and Drop.��

How to Databind RadTreeView in WPF

This is the first part of a series of posts demonstrating common scenarios of RadTreeView control. I'll be covering both WPF and Silverlight. One of the most common scenarios for our customers is populating the RadTreeView with data. In WPF data binding is one of the most powerful concepts. Data binding the Treeview can be done in several ways. In this post I'll explain the most common scenarios - binding to an XML file, binding to a Collection, and a more advanced sample - data binding using grouping and CollectionViewSource.

XML

Define the XML source
Define the HierarchicalDataTemplates
Set the ItemsSource of RadTreeView

Take a look at the XML data below to see the different XML elements. Basically we have an Artist type which has a collection of Albums; and Album type which has a collection of Songs.

First, for defining the XML data we are using the XmlDataProvider. You need to point the Source property to the XML file and set the XPath property to the root element of the XML.

Now that we have the data, the next step is to declare the HierarchicalDataTemplates which will "tell" the RadTreeView how to display the XML data.

Binding to a CollectionViewSource

(sample is based on Beatriz Costa's blog)

This is a bit more advanced example. Say you have a flat collection of objects and you want to group it by some common property. For this example we have a collection of animals. Each Animal class�has a Category property that we will use in order to create the hierarchical view. The grouping of the data can be easily achieved if we use the WPF CollectionViewSource class.

Here are the steps that we need to follow:

Define the Collection
Configure the CollectionViewSource
a. Set the Source property to point to our collection
b. Set the grouping using the GroupDescriptions

Beta version of Rad Controls for Silverlight 2 available

With the�Telerik Q2 release the Silverlight team releases the Beta version of the Rad Controls for Silverlight2.

The controls are separated in 4 different assemblies:

What is the current status of the suite and where we are heading to?

All of the controls are fully featured and extensively tested. We released two CTP versions of the controls before the current "Beta 1". We have got a lot of feedback from the community (a big THANKS! for that - keep it coming!)

We will now continue to work on polishing the existing�controls:
- adding more embedded skins and themes. A good example of what we are trying to achieve with the number of themes�is our RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX.
- adding better support for Microsoft Blend. You can edit each control theme in Blend2.5 even now,�but there is still a lot to be done in this area. We are working closely with Microsoft on this and I'm sure you will see some amazing design time support in the future.
- adding more examples and KB articles
- help - we have only an API reference for the moment. A complete help for all the controls will be available with the next major release
Web services support
We believe this is very important topic�especially when developing with Silverlight. We will�provide examples and sample applications for using WebServices with our controls and performing�CRUD� operations with them and the data source. We are also looking for feedback if creating some wrapper controls for easing the work with web services will be a good idea?
New controls that we are working on and hopefully�will have their debut with Telerik Q3 release:

Optimizing the load size of Telerik Silverlight controls

Following the expansion of our Silverlight suite (more than 15 controls coming out next week) and the feedback we've got from the community, we are now in a process of optimizing the size of the assemblies.

Instead of including all our controls into�one big assembly, we decided to group them�into several smaller ones. This will reduce the size of the XAP file when you are not using all the controls in the suite. We�came up with�the following list of assemblies:

Telerik.Windows.UI.dll
Telerik.Windows.Controls.Navigation.dll
Telerik.Windows.Controls.Input.dll
Telerik.Windows.Controls.Web.dll

Apart from this list there will be assemblies that hold the themes of the controls - e.g.�separate assemblies for the Telerik, Vista and�Default themes.

I want to emphasize, that the separation of the assemblies will�neither lead to more requests to the server,nor it�will�affect the deployment of your application. This is�due to the fact that�Silverlight apps�are deployed as a single XAP file that contains all the needed assembly references and resources.�

We would greatly appreciate your feedback about this change. �Drop us a line and let us know what you prefer -�one�monolithic assembly,�or separate assemblies for every control.�We will implement the above mentioned change in the next couple of days. Any suggestions and comments are welcome.

RadControls for Silverlight and WPF

My colleague Hristo Deshev just announced the availability of Telerik RadControls for WPF�Beta2. This is a very important release not only because it brings so many new features and controls for WPF, but because this is our�first release that includes�the Silverlight and WPF controls under a single distributable.

For this first release we ported just a few�Silverlight controls for WPF (namely TreeView, PanelBar, Calendar, DatePicker, Slider, ProgressBar and NumericUpDown), but in�the long�run almost all Silverlight controls that are applicable in a desktop scenario will be included in the WPF suite.

What does this mean to you as a developer? Why is this important? The biggest advantage of this decision is that you will be able to share the code that you write with our components with no changes between the WPF and Silverlight platforms. You get exactly the same API, exactly the same features and styles for each and every Telerik control you are using. This also means that your learning curve for using the controls for both platforms is cut in half - once you can write applications for Silverlight,�you are ready to write them in WPF too. Isn't this great?�

This is just the first step - we will add more value to our Silverlight and WPF suites for Q2 2008�which is already�knocking on the door. Right after Q2 some major new controls will be introduced - so, just stay tuned and�keep the�feedback coming!

RadMediaPlayer for Silverlight CTP is now live!

We are very happy to announce the official CTP of "RadControls for Silverlight" suite. Telerik is the first control vendor to give you a real Silverlight 1.0 controls which you can play with and use in your web pages.

Those of you who signed up through the CTP registration form have already received the bits. For those of you who missed the registration - it is still open.

The controls in the suite target Silverlight version 1.0 Beta. The official version of Silverlight 1.0 is expected this summer.

So what do you need in order to use the controls? Nothing special really - just make sure the following is installed on your machine:

- Silverlight 1.0 plugin which you will be prompted to install if you do not have it. The download size of the plugin is 1.38Mb for Windows. The install is available here.

- ASP.NET Ajax framework which can be installed from here (http://ajax.asp.net/). The download size is 1.4Mb.

The major add-on for this CTP is the RadMediaPlayer control. You can see the online demos here.

Why we have decided to implement a media player control? There are two main reasons behind this decision:

1. This is where the Silverlight technology is strong at the moment. The platform provides a supreme video quality with a minimum required bandwidth thus offering cost-effective and viable video delivery.

2. There are a couple of studies available that show the increasing users demand in providing interactivity in the digital technology market. For a reference you can see this Qualitative study done by RampRate.

RadMediaPlayer control is a fully featured control which tends to deliver a DVD-like user experience. Here is a full list of supported features:

- Support for streaming media

- Variety of media formats , such as (wmv, mp3,.)( full list here)

- Cross-browser, cross platform - based on Silverlight it supports, IE, Firefox, on Mac and Windows. A support for Linux and Opera is coming soon.

- Playlist support

- Watermark support

- Full screen support (+ full video control in full screen mode)

- Chapters support

- ASX files - allowing you to reuse your existing playlist files

- Rich client side API and events

Fiddler and IE7

Do you use Fiddler to inspect the HTTP traffic?

You may be faced with the following problem: since we started using the beta of the IE7 browser we started experiencing problems when monitoring the requests sent to http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 - the requests were not reported by the Fiddler tool.

It took us some time to understand what was the exact reason for this until we found the workaround for this issue here:

IE7 and the .NET Framework are hardcoded not to send requests for Localhost through any proxies, and as a proxy, Fiddler cannot intercept such traffic.

The workaround is to use your machine name as the hostname instead of Localhost or 127.0.0.1. So, for instance, rather than hitting http://localhost:8081/mytestpage.aspx, instead visit http://machinename:8081/mytestpage.aspx.
