A quick, but not so dirty Image Editor using the public RadEditor ImageEditing API

The ImageEditor dialog in RadEditor has been around for about half a year, providing much wanted common image editing capabilities to the editor's end users.

 

 

 This dialog in fact is the front-end of a basic image editing engine that has been built into the Telerik.Web.UI.dll. Some time ago our colleague Todd Anglin suggested that we make the API public so it can be used independent of the editor. Sounded like a good idea - and the coming Q3 2008 will allow you to take advantage of it :)

 And since the functionality is already available in the already released RadControls Futures (which acts as a public beta for the Q3), we have assembled a small, but elegant looking example (thanks to the styling capabilities of RadFormDecorator) that features a basic image editor, being used independently of RadEditor itself.

Here is a how the editor looks like:

The attached project will show you how to:

  • Create thumbnails
  • Use the following image editing options:
    • Opacity
    • Resize
    • Flip
    • Rotate
    • Crop
  • Preview the changes
  • Overwrite the original image

    Would it be possible to port this library to Silverlight suite? My first preference to have this as client side, however at worst case, we could also use it as server side where we could send the image to a service that includes these libraries and get back the result. Could you discuss this between SL and WinForm team? Don't forget to invite Valentin ;-)

    I think that we could easily prepare very similar Silverlight demo and when RadEditor for Silverlight is ready, we could include this functionality in it. Most probably shortly after Q3 (the beginning of November) I will create a blog post about this.

    Can this use other image.dll supporting more imageformat, and just have the UI/JSfunctions? perhaps imageGlue using EPS/TIFF and other imageformats.

I got a bit confused on the following line: ---------- "I think that we could easily prepare very similar Silverlight demo and when RadEditor for Silverlight is ready, we could include this functionality in it" ----------- Are you saying you could "prepare very similar Silverlight demo" NOW or are you saying, once the Bitmap features are built into RADSilverlight, then you can demo? That's one area that I have not discussed with Valentin in more detail. I think after Q3 release, I need go deeper on Imaging part more deeper! Looking forward to your SL Sample!

    Actually i a software developer. And i have problem that i cant manually enter resize units in textboxes infront of that Slider bar. So is there is any way to solve this....?

    In response to the Jan 23 post by nilesh, I would agree that it would be nice in future version to be able to manually enter the numeric values for width, height, etc, that are in the Image Editor. The slider works fine, but to get an exact figure, it is a real pain when simply typing in the number would be far easier.
