Telerik MVC Q3 2011 Beta preview: New charting and grid features, and better mobile support

Thursday, October 27, 2011 by ASP.NET MVC Team | Comments 19

Two days after the Telerik AJAX Q3 2011 Beta launch we are presenting you the MVC Q3'11 Beta preview bits. Among the highlights are the new Metro skin for all Telerik MVC Extensions, improved mobile support, new Pie chart series type, keyboard support for the editor and a bunch of new features for the grid extension. The compressed packages for the Open Source and Commercial distributions are ready and steady for download.

Enhanced Mobile Support | Metro skin

With this early preview we are conveying improved mobile support for our MVC extensions in terms of drag & drop and touch support for the grid, treeview, slider, splitter and window extensions. Furthermore, the skins set receives an important update with Metro UI design inspired addition.

Head on to the live demos to see those in action.

New features for existing extensions

Pie Chart - a brand new chart type joins the bar, column and line 'species' that came out with the debut of the Telerik HTML5-powered MVC charting in Q2 2011. It comes with all anticipated goodies such as tooltips, labels positioning and angles, smooth animations, etc., and it is blazing fast!

Expect one more chart type (XY, or scattered) to make its first appearance with the official Q3 2011 blast.

Grid Features - With this release we are enhancing the grid with features like column chooser (client show/hide API is also integrated), built-in foreign-key column with dropdown editor, and the ability to execute custom commands using command columns.

Editor keyboard support - the editor now benefits from intuitive keyboard support, which also amplifies its accessibility. Expect a demo showcasing this feature for the formal release in mid November.

I hope that you will enjoy all these charms which can make your MVC apps richer and more appealing to the end users. As always, do not spare us your comments and deliberations either by sharing them directly in this blog post or using the Q3 2011 Beta forum medium.

    Great to see the Telerik MVC controls progressing along. Would be great to see a multi column combo box where the drop down can be wider than the combo itself.

    Thanks for sharing your idea. If more people express interest in multi-column combobox, you may see it included in a future version of the suite.

    We can not export Data from MVC Telerik Grid, any plans to do this one soon?
  • Stefan Rahnev 04 Nov 2011
    You can export the grid data in CSV or Excel format as illustrated on this demo: http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-mvc/grid/customcommand and in the KB article referenced in its description section.

    Were issues relating to complex object editing within custom popup window using AJAX binding fixed?
  • Rosen 07 Nov 2011
    Hi Giancarlo,
    your question has been answered in the support ticket you have opened on this matter.
  • Alan Mosley 07 Nov 2011
    Is this a open source release?
  • Alastair 07 Nov 2011
    Having looked at the foreign key column support on the grid it would be nice if it was just called something like a lookup column and you could use ajax too. One scenario I often need is to restrict the values based upon previous values from other selections in the edit page. Maybe next release :-)

    @Alan:
    The Q3'11 Beta has an Open Source and Commercial downloads, follow the links in the post.
    @Alastair:
    Your feedback will be passed to our devteam.

    I have expressed an interest in a column alignment feature, perhaps a method added to the fluent interface .Align(GridColumnAlignment.Right) or some such method. Is this something that could be added to a wish-list for a future release?
    You did provide me with a work around but it means that I have to set a class for header, body, group footer and footer for each column that needs alignment - and as we are a finance house that is most columns in a grid...

    @John:
    Thanks for your suggestion. I'm afraid that we do not have immediate plans to add such functionality as built-in feature. However, we will add it to the suggestions list from which we pick features to be implemented in future releases.

    Thanks for the reply. One more thing, the documentation states early November for the release date... we are releasing tomorrow and my plan was to upgrade and solve various workarounds/add new features during the next sprint. Do you advise upgrading to the beta version and assume that we will be able to upgrade again during this sprint (1 month)?
    Cheers
    John

    Not sure where you found this information, but the official release is slated for the middle of the next week. We do not recommend using the Q3'11 Beta version in production environment, as stated in the Beta EULA. If plausible, please stand by for the official drop next week.
  • John 09 Nov 2011
    Hi Stefan,
    This is from the roadmap documentation:
    "The Q3 2011 release (expected in the beginning of November) will bring two new series types and interactivity to the chart component, several new grid features, and one new skin for all MVC extensions, enthused from the Metro UI design concept."
    I will wait until next week.
  • Stefan Rahnev 09 Nov 2011
    I see that this information is indeed a bit misleading, it should be read "in the first half of November" or better yet, "mid November".
  • John 09 Nov 2011
    sorry, re-posted my last reply.
    That is good news... thanks
    John
  • Kevin 12 Nov 2011
    When will this make it to nuget?
  • Andy 12 Nov 2011
    I second the idea of multi-column combo boxes!
  • Stefan Rahnev 14 Nov 2011
    @Kevin:
    A NuGet OS package will be uploaded right after our official MVC3 release, due in the middle of this week.
    @Andy:
    Your upvoting for this feature is taken into account.
