Telerik blogs

With the pending release of the Telerik Reporting product (should go live by the end of March) and forthcoming price tag on the Windows Forms UI controls, many customers asked what do we plan to do with those two product lines and what existing customers will get.

Some good news for existing customers – all Subscription holders WILL get updates for Windows Forms and Reporting AT NO COST till their subscription expires. That is, our system will assume that you have an all-inclusive license (that is, a license which includes ASP.NET and Windows Forms UI Controls and Reporting). Like every great deal, it begs the question – “Where’s the catch? If I am given all these products today, what will happen when my renewal is due? Will I be forced to pay the all-inclusive renewal rate in spite of the fact that I need only the ASP.NET product suite?” As always, you can expect us to show courtesy and care for our existing customers, so why not consider and enjoy the “free lunch”… Our decision to offer the 2 new products for free to all active subscription holders as of Q1 is definitely not a trick to cunningly make you buy into something you don’t need. It has always been our goal to bring more value with each and every release or announcement we make, so if you feel that you are not likely to use any of the additional Telerik products you will not have to pay for them at all.

All existing customers will be able to decide whether they want to renew:

  • their ASP.NET subscription
  • their Windows Forms subscription
  • their Reporting subscription… or
  • their subscription for all three product lines

So, stay tuned for the official releases and let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to answer your questions/comments on my blog.

EDIT: Based on a few questions I got from Todd, I decided to add a FAQ:

1.       If I choose not to renew my subscription for all three products what happens to the other controls I’ve been using?
Our policy is crystal clear – you can continue to use the versions that were licensed to you indefinitely even without a subscription. The drawback of not having a subscription is that you will not receive future updates and we plan to enrich our Windows Forms UI controls and the Reporting solution quite a bit in the months/years to come. Your support package will also be degraded if your subscription expires.

2.       When does the “grandfather” rule apply? Do I have to own a Developer Subscription by a specific date to get this offer? In other words, if I buy a Subscription days before the release will I get a year of updates for the “big” package?
The cut-off date is the 20th of April. If you have an active subscription by the 20th of April, you will get a subscription for the Windows Forms components and the Reporting line at no cost.

3.       Is there any “grace” period? If my subscription expires two weeks after Q1, do I have to decide at that time if I want all of the products?
At present we do not plan to offer a grace period. Apart from the technical challenges to support such a grace period in our order system, we believe that a year full of updates for all three products justifies the $149 extra investment. Moreover, by the cut-off date, we will have released the Reporting tool and we will be running a beta for the Windows Forms controls so customers will be able to make an informed decision whether they want the new products or not.

4.       Is there any upgrade pricing? If I choose only to buy a ASP.NET subscription when my current subscription expires, but next year I decide I want all three product lines, is there special upgrade pricing to the higher subscription model? Can I just pay the higher renewal fee at that time or do I have buy something else? We may want to address these concerns, too.
Yes, we will offer preferential upgrade pricing. I will blog about the upgrade schedule in the next week or two.
