Metro UI for RadControls for Silverlight and WPF

by XAML Team | Comments 21

Windows 8 will bring exciting times to all application developers, especially those who will invest in creating the immersive applications we all saw in that video. We loved the tiles and the clean modern look and how they integrate perfectly within the UI. And I am guessing a lot of software will transition to new ways.

As always Telerik will ease this process by providing its Silverlight and WPF offering with Metro UI Theme and kick start your Windows 8 development. The theme is built from the ground-up to accommodate all the best practices in Metro UI applications.

The theme also utilizes a brand new approach for theming – palettes. You might have already seen the Executive Dashboard demo which uses the same approach and served as a proof of concept for the theme. It will allow both easy changing the accented colors as well as overall easy, real-time customization.

All this goody goodness will be coming with Telerik’s Q2 release. Stay tuned for even more announcements during the release week as there will be a few surprises.

I didn't like the ribbon in Metro because it's not Metro style at all .. icons and clutter

Metro celebrating the typography and space "the wise use of course"

All others are good and the media player is very good

It looks good overall, but I am not convinced by the metro ribbon. Metro is more than just making everything flat and using simple art - it can't be used as a general skin.

Considered changing the behavior of the ribbon to be more like the WP7 tabs (I think they call it the pivot)? I think it might be more appropriate.

Hit http://riagenic.com/ and see what Scott Barnes (ex WPF PM) has to say about the Metro design; you might find some fresh inspiration for your metro styling and behavior.

To comment on the folks talking about RadRibbonBar...

The RibbonUI and the implementation shown above is an example of switching the theme to Metro and letting it roll - to demonstrate that we have the theme for the Ribbon.  All things considered, RibbonUI is part of the Office UX/UI design, meaning that most standard uses of the RibbonBar would look better with one of our themes, like Office*, Win, Transparent, or Expression.  Imagine using Word or Excel without all those icons and options, you'd be nearly crippled unless you can customize to a T what you would need in a more 'Metro' fashion.  Or if you are one of those people who survives on keyboard shortcuts alone. ;)

That being said, RadRibbonBar and the Ribbon ideology does offer some good conceptual elements for implementing functionality within your application.  What if we use the Ribbon for what it is good for, but incorporate Metro concepts to utilize more text and less icons, to get the best of both worlds?  Hmm, sounds like I just challenged myself to a blog series... Stay tuned, I've got a few fun things in the works around this release (and other projects I can't talk about yet), but I'll start working up the concepts for this for around when our Metro theme officially launches in Q2.

Ribbon with metro looks messy but all else is wonderful.

I don't think ribbon should really be used with metro because ribbon is towards the icons and metro towards the language.

simply, WONDERFUL!

This really has taken the sizzle out of Silverlight in my view.  Flat and pastel like.  Personally I'm not a fan.

Windows 8 looks like an even greater disapointment.

One of the reasons Apple has had such great penetration is their understanding of interfaces and the UI / UX.  Even their proposed "spaceship" office building incorporates their vision.

Thank you for the good writeup. It in fact used to be a amusement account it.Glance advanced to more delivered agreeable from you!By the way, how can we communicate?

Unfortunatelly Metro style is oversimplified to the point that it looks cheap. There is nothing positively stunning about it. Windows 7, OS X and Android are much more pleasing to the eye.
