What's next in 2012 for the Telerik AJAX and MVC products

Friday, December 16, 2011 by ASP.NET AJAX Team | Comments 14
Now that the final major release of the Telerik DevTools division is behind our backs, it is time to make some preliminary plans for year 2012. The AJAX and MVC suites received important updates throughout 2011 and, as you probably expect, this trend will continue next year. One tad you need to have in mind is that the DevTools release will be shifted one month ahead, therefore it will be out in mid February, instead of mid March as it used to be. roadmap3

This means that you will get all that is slated for the next release sooner than you imagined. Isn't that cool?

But enough common talk, I am giving you the actual spotlights for the first major release of RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX and Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC.

RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX

The two focus points that will be with high priority during 2012 will be improvements targeting touchscreen mobile devices and enhanced accessibility. Another thing that will take a central place will be the support of HTML5 features, where applicable (note that the AJAX upload and input controls already has integrated HTML5 features). Among the rest of the highlights for the next release are several substantial features for the editor, grid, listview, org chart, scheduler and treelist controls. To name a few:

  • Comments and track changes Editor features, as well as thumbnail view in its Image Manager
  • Grid cell/column selection
  • Client-side binding and client templates support for the ListView
  • Drag and drop and expand/collapse for nodes in OrgChart
  • New design-time wizard and integrated time zones support for scheduler; client-side binding for SPRadScheduler
  • Export to Excel and client features for the TreeList

See Detailed Roadmap >>

Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC

The MVC Extensions will also obtain some notable updates next year, starting with improved MVC authorization support and combined js file for all components and features. In the long run, they will be more and more tightly integrated with the Kendo UI framework which had its first prime time a couple of weeks ago. The spotlights for the next major release will be new Area chart type and many features across the entire suite. Here are some of them:

  • Multiple value axes and plot bands for the chart
  • Cascading comboboxes
  • Extended editing API for the grid
  • Client API for adding/removing nodes in the treeview

See Detailed Roadmap >>

We have more exciting stuff in mind post R1 2012, and will divulge further details later during 2012, so stay tuned.

Additionally, to help us determine and prioritize what's coming next in both of our ASP.NET web product lines, do not be shy and voice your feedback by either leaving a comment in this post, submit it using the new improved and dandy version of the Telerik Issue Tracker we've just published, or fill the AJAX product survey that is active till the end of this week. We are constantly listening to what you say, as you are the driving force that makes our products better and more useful with each consecutive release.

    I think these components/features are missing :
    1- combobox with grid-view items (multi column items)
    2- combobox with tree-view items
    3-image gallary control
    4-client-side api for tab-strip (adding/removing)
    5- customizable filters for grid columns

    Great News for ASP MVC exts is that, in long run it will be more integrated with Kendo HTML5 UI  Framework. Both are great products.  But my question is how long these will remain as Open Source?

    @Mahmoud:
    I think we have support for all the features you listed. See the online demos below for reference:
    (multi-column combobox items)http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/combobox/examples/functionality/multicolumncombo/defaultcs.aspx
    (treeview in combobox) http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/treeview/examples/functionality/treeviewcombobox/defaultcs.aspx?product=combobox
    (image gallery, using rotator) http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/rotator/examples/gallery/defaultcs.aspx
    (client-side API for add/remove tabs) http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/tabstrip/examples/clientside/addremovedisable/defaultcs.aspx
    (customizable grid filters) http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/grid/examples/programming/filtertemplate/defaultcs.aspx
    @Madhav:
    We do not intend to alter the current licensing model of our MVC extensions and Kendo UI. This means that you will continue to have the dual licensing scheme (for GPL-compatible and commercial projects, respectively).

    I thing that you shuld provide Scheduler control, especialy that jQuery does not provide this type off control and propable doesn't have any plans to release it in near future
  • Stefan Rahnev 20 Dec 2011
    I suppose that you propose that for our MVC suite, since we do have ASP.NET AJAX scheduler control. Although presently we do not have immediate plans for such a component, note that you can use our ASP.NET AJAX scheduler with web service binding (see this demo for ref: http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/scheduler/examples/webservice/defaultcs.aspx) in MVC projects.

    Hi,
    if you can add these features in MVC, we will be so thankful
    1- Carousel
    2- Multi days select in Calendar
    3- Organizational Chart
    thanks in advance

    While all of the new ASP.Net w/ Ajax features are good there are a few outstanding items that really need to be done:
    1-Get the Visual Style Builder out of beta
    2-Document the client-side API as thoroughly as the server side API reference is.
    3-Update the step by step tutorial for some of the new controls and functions

    Do we have any plans to introduce drag and drop feature for upload control?
    If not then I think this feature should be included into the roadmap

    Improve RadInput with tag support like on these examples:

    http://iplantideas.com/quicktag/
    http://www.emposha.com/demo/fcbkcomplete_2/
    http://xoxco.com/projects/code/tagsinput/
    http://loopj.com/jquery-tokeninput/

    - Limit input text characters for tags
    - Limit tag number
    - automatic tag checking for duplicates
    - Diferent skins for tags
    - Allow Data binding

    Hiten: the RadAsyncUpload control from the RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX supports drag-and-drop via the File API as can be seen here (http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/asyncupload/examples/draganddrop/defaultcs.aspx?product=asyncupload).
    As for ASP.NET MVC, the Upload component also supports drag-and-drop through the File API (http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-mvc/upload)
    Hugo: Thank you for your suggestions! While some of these items are possible with the RadInput control and regular text it seems as if you're specifically looking for overall tag support, as in your second example with the "sleep" tag. I'll bring this feedback back to the team! :)

    You have started the simple render for ASP.Net AJAX combo box to aid mobile. Now you also need same method for the calendar control. These 2 simple controls are the most prominent controls used in web and mobile. Please make calendar a priority in mobile.
  • Veli 05 Jan 2012
    @Tre'Book
    Are you referring to the RadDatePickers and their input? If so, starting with the upcoming Vol.1 2012 release, RadInput controls will get single input rendering enabled by default. This will greatly reduce and optimize the rendering of the input controls. Date pickers will also benefit from the lightweight rendering of their built-in inputs.

    @Kevin
    We are working on updates for the Visual Style Builder now and we will probably take it out f Beta after the Q1 2012 release.
    Improving the client-side API documentation is another ongoing task. Though it will not be available in a separate section as the server-side one. You can rather find the details under each control documentation in the Client-Side Programming section. Also, you can try using the jQuery intellisense and thus be able to see description for each method right in Visual Studio, while developing, as you do for the server-side methods.
    Regarding the step-by-step tutorial, we are regularly updating it, though it comes with a slight delay. We are planning the next upload and it should be soon available.

    all this demos are for the ASP.Net-Ajax, not for the MVC.
    I personally need the multi-column Combobox, customizable filters in grid and the breadcrumb control.
