Introducing the Telerik Control Panel

by Chris Eargle | Comments 11

Are you tired of clicking around to find that installer you swear you downloaded last week, only to give up and download it again? Are you annoyed by popup reminders, but turning them off means you may forget to update your controls? Well, worry no more! We’ve made it easier than ever to install and update your favorite Telerik products with the brand new Telerik Control Panel.

Getting Started

To get started, download the Telerik Control Panel from telerik.com by visiting your account page. The option to download and install the Control Panel is front and center on the page.

You can find the Telerik Control Panel in the Telerik menu in Start after installation. If you’re using Windows 8, it will be located in Apps.

The Fun Begins

Upon launching the application, you will need to provide your Telerik account credentials then click the sign in button.

image

Afterwards, you will be presented with a screen containing sections for all products, purchased products, trial products, and free products. These sections each have a split screen view: the left contains installed products that can be updated; the right contains products that can be installed.

You can continue by selecting products to install or upgrade. The Telerik Control Panel makes it easy for you to install multiple products in one go. Simply select the products you wish to install, and the option to proceed or cancel will be displayed. You can mix and match purchased products, free products, and trial products.

Perhaps you are supporting WPF and Silverlight applications. Simply select both of them and click Proceed.

image

You will then be given the opportunity to review your choices and make changes to the installation folder. When you’re ready to proceed, accept the license agreements and click Proceed. If you forgot something or checked the wrong box, click Back and correct your selection.

The Telerik Control Panel will download the necessary files for installation and then install them to their location. Easy as 3.14159265!

After installation is complete, you will be returned to the main screen to install or update more products.

Some Practical Advice

The Telerik Control Panel makes it easy to view our wide selection of products and download new solutions to evaluate. But that’s not the only reason we created it.

If you have update notifications turned on in Visual Studio, you’re probably used to seeing the occasional popup reminding you of new Telerik product versions. It’s a brief message and isn’t cumbersome with only a couple of products installed. However, if you have the Ultimate Collection, you may spend a significant amount of time updating everything from within Visual Studio.

Whenever a new Q release is available, you can now update everything you need at one time from the Telerik Control Panel; we want to make it as easy as possible for you to use the latest versions of our controls. If an update is available for a product, an Update checkbox will appear next to the product in the Installed Products panel. Use the Update All checkbox to select everything, or make your selection on an individual product basis.

Very convenient tool! It would be great if it also included internal builds and allowed to install them.
And it would be double-great if it allowed to roll back to previous stable builds.

Hello Andrei and Ahai,
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll pass it along, but I recommend using the "Give Feedback" feature to ensure it gets to the right people. We've been doing a lot of make feedback easier across products by including easy to access buttons to send it.

Please add offline installation to it. What if I wan't install on offline machine?
Kevin
Indeed, internal builds would make it very convenient.  Currently i have to go to each product and look 1 by 1 to see if new internal builds are available.
Dennis
Agree with Kalerab - there must be an offline installation.

Hi This is great initiative - I have a suggestion which is useful for individuals like me and can work fine in corporate environments.
My scenario I have a set of 3 PCs connected by mouse without borders.
now whenever there is an update I have to upgrade all systems individually.
You can implement an advance option for us to select a download folder on network drive - so that I set the same destination on all 3 systems and one update is downloaded is only once.

Amar

Hello

It would be great if you can have multiple versions on the same workstation, i.e. 2012 Q1, 2012 Q2, 2012 Q3. If you want to delete an old version then the tool must allow you to as well. Each time an update comes out I don't want to have to update all my project because a Q1 or Q2 has been removed off the box. Want them still to remain there until ready to remove manually.

Regards,

Simon

my control panel just patched and now it shows the option of "change" for my installed software.  I have seen "update" as an option before, but what does "change" mean?
Olafur Gislason
I have the same question as Kevin here and it would be nice to get an answer?  What does "change" mean in the Telerik Control Panel?  This shows always and you don't know if there is actually an update.
Andrey
Hi all,
Sorry for taking so long to reply to your comments.

kalerab, Dennis - All of our offline installation packages as well as various other product-related resources are available through the "Your Account" page on our website. We currently have no plans on dropping support for those, so you can keep using those if that is your preference.

Kevin - Adding support for internal builds is definitely something on our radar. We are already making steps toward making those available.

Amar - Thank you for the idea and the details around your setup. We will look into making our Control Panel work better for cases like yours as well as team/corporate environments.

Simon Murrell - We have already added support for not removing older versions when upgrading in the Control Panel options (just click the "gear" icon in the top right corner of the app). We have some additional enhancements for that case in the works.

Kevin White, Olafur Gislason - The "Change" option lets you add or remove installation features for your currrent installation. We realized "Change" can be misleading, so the option is now titled "Turn Features On/Off".

All the best,
Andrey
The Telerik Team
