Wednesday, January 20, 2010 by Nikolay Atanasov | Comments 10

We now have a brand new, including over 1000 pages, free training courseware for RadControls for Silverlight. It provides tons of tips and tricks, how-tos, code samples (in XAML and both in C# and VB). All these structured in a step-by-step manner and covering most of the available RadControls for Silverlight.

This training material will help you quickly get up to speed with Silverlight and will discuss some of the issues in common with all RadControls such as binding or theming, working with RIA Services (also WCF and ADO.NET), working with Expression Blend, etc.

The courseware is available to everyone for free download from our website:
PDF (47MB)

Special thanks go to the whole team at Falafel Software, who spent a lot of efforts on making this book.

We will continue to enhance the content of the courseware and we will greatly appreciate your feedback on what other demos, samples, how-tos, tips or tricks you would like to get included in the book.

    Nice one.

Well done Telerik, well done Falafel.

Wow! Initial impressions are that this looks really good. I look forward to having a proper look through it at the weekend. Well done to whoever was behind this initiative - it was sorely needed.

I just have one quick question: Is there any reason why the cover indicates that it is "Part 2". A quick initial glance indicates it is a complete "Part 1" course, but maybe I've missed something?

I notice that section 3.1 refers to a project for the section but, unless I've just missed it, there doesn't seem to be any hint at where you get this file from.

    Thanks a Million Folks!
A huge thank you goes to Mr. Noel Rice the author of this book (VP of Falafel Software).  This is Noel 9th book for Telerik in the last 3.5 years.
A huge effort went into writing this book and we are all very proud of it here at Falafel.  I hope you can all enjoy it.

BTW, the reason the cover says Part 2, is because we had to split the book into 2 parts in case anyone wants to print the book from Lulu.com, as Lulu will not allow a book over 750 pages to be printed.  This book is over 1100 pages.

The PDF download is the whole book Telerik will probably just change the cover to take off the Part 2 addition in order not to confuse anyone.
For Lulu, we think we will just split the book in half so that you can print it in case you need to.

Thanks for all the encouraging testimonials!
    -Lino
P.S What would you like to see next?  Sitefinity book? or WebUI book?

My sincere thanks to Telerik for providing this and my double Thanks to my good old friend Lino from Borland :-)

    I'm downloading it now and will certainly start digging into it soon; Nik,you have asked for some feedback and here is my two cents;
Telerik, in my opinion has one of the best support (even on the forum plus the direct support). In many cases, customers bring up cases or questions where the engineers at Telerik respond with not only an answer but also sample codes or solutions to back it up. For example if you look at Grid, there have been tons of samples offered. To add to that, even with blogs we get a lot of samples. However, due to the nature of this business (new stuff come up), the blogs and the posts on the forum keep getting buried and new people never get to see them. Even the search sometimes does not point you to them.
Now you have this great book in the form PDF, which can get updated, my humble suggestion is to go back and either include some of those samples in the PDF or link to the samples for people to see them. For example Kiril had made some GREAT samples for the book control based on the questions I asked. Well those are real valuable samples that never made it to the demo sections and I think they should be in the book. Speaking of the book, I noticed many of the new controls are missing from this PDF file :-)

    Hope this helps!

The courseware seems to assume downloadable source code but the announcement post refers only to a PDF. Every chapter from Chapter 2 onwards starts with a path reference to the source code but this has not been provided

eg on page 20 (Section 2.1) the pdf says "Find the projects for this chapter at... \Courseware\Projects\<CS/VB>\SilverlightIntroduction\SilverlightIntroduction.sln"

Can you give the full URL for the download of this source code

    Thanks,
    Ian

Nik, I like to pose another question. This manual has certainly taken a lot of work to prepare. But with the speed that Microsoft is going with SL 4, 5, 6,... And Telerik following their path, this book will become obsolete very fast if it's not maintained. However, if it is maintained, it will be a valuable asset for Telerik since it covers the controls in more detail. So, the question will this book be updated periodically? Like there used to be a show here DEAL OR NO DEAL? :-)
    ..Ben
  • Thanks for all your comments:

@Ian - We removed the "Part2" indicator from the book's cover.
@ Stuart - The sample C# projects can now be downloaded along with the book at: http://www.telerik.com/support/documentation-and-tutorials/step-by-step-tutorial-for-silverlight.aspx.
@Ben - Thanks for all your suggestions. We will definitely keep them in mind when updating the book next time, which on its part answers the question whether we will regularly update the content. We will surely maintain and keep this book up to date and we will make sure that it always covers the Silverlight version, on which our official offering is built. For example we have slightly updated this version of the book to cover the new WCF RIA Services. We also plan to extend the content by adding chapters/sections about the currently missing controls.

Much to the disgust of "real" programmers I prefer to code in VB but all the examples are in C#. Have the VB examples not been created and if not are they going to be?
