Its been a while since my last blog post. But this is all for good. It was a busy month for the Telerik Silverlight Team. We did a couple of public releases in the last few weeks. Our last release was yesterday - if you still haven't saw it - do this now - we shipped the missing "5th element" of the suite - the GridView control for Silverlight. Our next release will be in the middle of December when we will release our next essential control - the Docking Manager for Silverlight.

Now back on the topic. One of the major improvements in latest release...

For those of us who were not lucky enough to go to the PDC this week, Microsoft published all the video recordings online at the Channel9 website. If you have been there you should have seen the Telerik booth and some of my colleagues - we were once again the gold sponsor of the conference.

Following this great news, we released an update of our RadControls for Silverlight2 suite that is compatible with this latest plugin.

The update is now available for download from your client.net account.

 

With this update, we expanded the suite with two bright new controls - RadContextMenu and RadCoverFlow, and we added support for custom Themes!

Here at Telerik we are cooking a lot of things with Silverlight. You will see some great new (and big!) controls with our Q3 release that is already knocking on the door.

One small, but very popular thing, that is missing in Silverlight2 these days is the Context Menu support. As we got this working already internally, I thought that I'll share the good news with you :)

This image above shows the integration between the new RadContextMenu and RadTreeView. As you can see you have full control over the context menu content, and you can also control the shortcut keys that will open the menu.

One question we receive very often from our customers, is how to load an image, from different relative folders in Silverlight. This is a little bit tricky and it is different from the way it is working in HTML.

This is the first part of a series of posts demonstrating common scenarios of RadTreeView control. I’ll be covering both WPF and Silverlight. One of the most common scenarios for our customers is populating the RadTreeView with data. In WPF data binding is one of the most powerful concepts. Data binding the Treeview can be done in several ways. With the Telerik Q2 release the Silverlight team releases the Beta version of the Rad Controls for Silverlight2.

The controls are separated in 4 different assemblies:
 
Telerik.Windows.Controls.Navigation
  - Window, Menu, TreeView, TabControl, PanelBar, Cube

Telerik.Windows.Controls.Input
  - ComboBox, Upload, Calendar, DatePicker, NumericUpDown

Telerik.Windows.Controls.MediaPlayer 
 - MediaPlayer.

Telerik.Windows.Controls
  - Range Slider, ProgressBar, WrapPanel, DockPanel, UniformGridPanel
  

What is the current status of the suite and where we are heading to?

All of the controls are fully featured and extensively tested. We released two CTP versions of the controls before the current "Beta 1". We have got a lot of feedback from the community (a big THANKS! for that - keep it coming!)

Following the expansion of our Silverlight suite (more than 15 controls coming out next week) and the feedback we’ve got from the community, we are now in a process of optimizing the size of the assemblies.

Instead of including all our controls into one big assembly, we decided to group them into several smaller ones. This will reduce the size of the XAP file when you are not using all the controls in the suite. We came up with the following list of assemblies:

• Telerik.Windows.UI.dll
• Telerik.Windows.Controls.Navigation.dll
• Telerik.Windows.Controls.Input.dll
• Telerik.Windows.Controls.Web.dll

Apart from this list there will be assemblies that hold the themes of the controls - e.g. separate assemblies for the Telerik, Vista and Default themes.

My colleague Hristo Deshev just announced the availability of Telerik RadControls for WPF Beta2. This is a very important release not only because it brings so many new features and controls for WPF, but because this is our first release that includes the Silverlight and WPF controls under a single distributable.

For this first release we ported just a few Silverlight controls for WPF (namely TreeView, PanelBar, Calendar, DatePicker, Slider, ProgressBar and NumericUpDown), but in the long run almost all Silverlight controls that are applicable in a desktop scenario will be included in the WPF suite.
