Announcing RadEditor for Silverlight CTP

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 by XAML Team | Comments 13

We are very excited  to announce that our Q1 release will feature a CTP edition of Telerik RadEditor for Silverlight. This initial version will support the most basic set of features but you can rest assured that there is a lot more cooking. RadEditor integrates three of our new controls for Silverlight – RadToolbar, RadToobarTray and RadColorPicker. The first two will give you fine-grained control over the positioning of the elements you choose to insert in your editor. The customizable RadColorPicker is used for choosing font and highlight colors and offers a well-known tool to end-users. Below you can find a non-exhaustive list of the initially supported text-formatting features:

  • Undo
  • Redo
  • Insert Hyperlink
  • Insert Image
  • Insert Horizontal Rule
  • Indent
  • Outdent
  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • Justify Left
  • Justify Center
  • Justify Right
  • Justify Full
  • Ordered List
  • Unordered List
  • Superscript
  • Subscript
  • Strikethrough
  • Font Size
  • Font Family
  • Font Color
  • Highlight Color

API-wise you will be able to manipulate the text in the editor via the exposed methods used internally by the toolbar elements. Getting and setting the selected text, events for changes in the text, etc. will all be available for you to use, of course, enabling you to make the best out of the control. In case we missed something you consider important, please let us know and we’ll do our best to include it in the future versions of RadEditor. We highly value your feedback, so please let us know what you think about RadEditor and the scenarios in which you might want to use it.

    This sounds (and looks) great!
    Looking forward to test it.

Could you provide some informarion on which document formats are supported for loading and saving the text (rtf, docx, html etc.)?

Does it component require us to set the plugin as "Windowless"? If yes, I've noticed Windowless affects on video player during playing.
    Some thought!

Any chance of load/unload to a xaml formatted FlowDocument?
  • Matt Watson 10 Feb 2009
    Yes, does it support HTML?!?!
  • Henrik 11 Feb 2009
Some sort of XAML support would be nice for loading/unloading content. And an easy way to switch from editable rich text to just a simple display of the content (no toolbars etc.).

@Ingmar: For now RadEditor supports loading only HTML and plain text documents

@Ben: Yes, you'll have to set the SL plugin to windowless mode when using RadEditor

@John: No, the plugin doesn't support FlowDocuments at this point.

@Matt: Yes, RadEditor supports HTML content

@Henrik: This probably won't make it for the Q1 release, but we'll certainly work on it for future versions of RadEditor.

The post says that the control being releasted with Q1 2009 is a CTP.  What do you anticipate the stability of this control to be?  Is it 'integrate into our product and ship to clients' stable?

A simple document viewer is sorely missing in Silverlight.  I could sooner use that than I could use a rich editor, actually.

If adapters were available to deal with formatting custom content types, that would be grand.  Being able to apply styling rules for spans would be great as well (something analogous to CSS classes, only via WPF styles).

Will there be improvement in the readability of Text?

I find reading text in Silverlight to be unbearable and quite frustrating.

I understand that this is an issue with Silverlight and not Telerik but I was just wondering if the Wizards at Telerik figured out a way to improve text readability in Silverlight?

    Now that would be something!

@Kevin: RadEditor is in a CTP stage, so most probably there will be further changes to the API, bugfixes, as well as changes to the feature set - that being said, I wouldn't yet recommend using it in production code.
@Johnny: We can't mess with the inner workings of the SL plugin, so there isn't much we can do to improve text rendering and formatting. You'll have to bear with us until the guys at MS take care of that :)

Looking good! How is table support coming along?
  • Tihomir Petkov 23 Feb 2009
    Hi AdamR,
Table support is a planned feature for RadEditor, so it's definitely coming along.

    It definitely looks good.

The HIGHLY desired feature would be a Spellchecking.
