Telerik ScheduleView for Silverlight/WPF questions and answers.

by XAML Team | Comments 13

I would like to answer a few questions that you might have about our brand new RadScheduleView control.

Q) When is the Silverlight version coming?

A) We will do our best to provide the Silverlight version by the end of the year.

UPDATE: We already published a pre-beta version that can be downloaded in this forum. The Beta is expected in Mid February, the RTM version will be available with Q1 2011 in Mid March.

Q) Why did you create a new control instead of changing the existing RadScheduler?

A) We wanted to address all known issues the old control has – performance, styling and ease of use. Initially we wanted to replace RadScheduler with the new control, but we introduced many API changes and decided that it would be much easier to upgrade if we keep both controls for a while.

Q) What are the new features?

A) Multiple grouping, dragging multiple appointments, exact rendering and custom views, just to name a few. There are also tons of small features and improvements that allow you to customize almost any part of the control – from the time ruler’s ticks to the view definition buttons and the drag-drop behavior.

Q) Why would I want to use RadScheduleView?

A) RadScheduleView is much easier to use and customize. We took into account all of the communication that we had with you during the past few years and created a control that:

- Is very MVVM friendly.

- Is much faster than RadScheduler, especially with large data sources.

- Can have almost any part customized without the need to create a custom theme. In addition, the custom themes are much easier to create because of the greatly reduced XAML size.

- Can group by multiple resources, drag multiple appointments, show the appointments exactly where they are, zoom in and out by both axis, and many more…

Q) I already have an application that uses RadScheduler. How can I upgrade it?

A) We will provide detailed upgrade instructions with Q3 2010. It should be easy enough even without such instructions, so we strongly encourage everyone to try to upgrade with the beta version and provide us with feedback. There is still time to make small improvements in the control that will ease your life!

Q) What is “Exact rendering” or “Precise rendering”?

A) Exact rendering is the ability to place the appointments exactly where they are on the time line, e.g. if an appointment starts at 10:21AM it will be rendered exactly at 10:21AM (the old RadScheduler would render such appointment at 10:15AM)

Q) Where is the Month View?

A) Month View didn’t make it for the Beta, but it will be present in Q3 2010.

Q) Where are the themes?

A) We are still polishing them, hence we included only the default theme in the Beta.

Q) Are you going to add new functionality in RadScheduler?

A) All new requested and already planned features will be added in RadScheduleView, including support for upcoming versions of Silverlight. From now on RadScheduler will receive only minor bug fixes, at least by Q2 2011 (mid 2011).

Q) How long will you keep both controls?

A) For now we will keep RadScheduler in the RadControls installation. After Q2 2011 it will be removed from the installation and will be provided on demand for those of you who didn’t upgraded their applications yet.

We prepared a short survey for the beta testers:

and we will be glad to get your feedback and comments it in the forums:

Hello Valeri;
This was an excellent blog to clear lots of questions. As you know MSFT is also working on LightSwitch that is a by-product of Silverlight. I'm seeing many of Telerik's controls to be a perfect control to be used within LS. LS saves lots of time of time by creating the essential plumbing and you can get to final result much faster.
I'm hoping the team is also testing and checking these controls, especially composite controls like RADScheduleView, ReportViewer and etc. within LS. In fact many developers who have not used Silverlight before, are now coming to Silverlight, because of LS. This creates a great opportunity for Telerik to showcase it's SL controls.

Once you give me the green light, I would to start talking about this control and others on LS forum and discuss what they can do. You have my email, contact me via email if you wish.

Thanks!

Will there be a beta of the RadScheduleView for Silverlight or will it just be release the final Q3 release?  I've got a highly customized Silverlight RadScheduler that I'd like to test it on.  Thanks.

@Ben, we are preparing a how-to series of blog posts about LightSwitch and its customization. Most probably will begin blogging shortly after Q3.
@Keith, there will be a beta version of RadScheduleView for Silverlight immediately after we have something useful to show, hopefully a couple of weeks after Q3.

Thank you Valeri for quick response. Once you guys are ready, I'll begin to echo those blogs on LS forum to get their attention.

One note/question: The [beautiful] transition we just saw, can a control have those transition if they are used within LS? If yes, it be awesome and eye catching to show Telerik controls with transition within LS. People will jump on it :-)

Thanks!

To use RadTransitionControl in LightSwitch you will have to most probably customize the LightSwitch shell (one of the aspects we want to cover in our blog series)

I've highly customized your RadScheduler to meet real-time factory work order schedule management.
The only thing that I can not do is the work shifts. Will RadScheduleView take the shifts into consideration ?

I don't think that we have code that is doing what you need out of the box, but I would recommend sending us a support ticket with more information about your scenario. It is very possible the new RadScheduleView will be a lot easier to customize and program to suit your needs.

Hi,
Is there any news on the status of the new SchedulerView? We are working in a project where the current scheduler is not good enough, mostly because of resources/performance/missing vertical scroll in timeline, and where wondering if you new anything more conserning when SchedulerView will be out? Or should we use time customizing the current one as shown in other examples.

Hi Kjell,

RadScheduleView for WPF is already out, you could check our online examples. We are preparing a Service pack release next week where we will introduce several improvements in the styling and the API.

If you are asking about the Silverlight version, we are planning to release a beta version near the end of January. We postponed the beta because we wanted all API changes to enter in the Silverlight version automatically.

Hi Valeri,

Thanks for the response, should have specified that I ment the Silverlight version. If it reach the Beta at end of January, does that mean it will be part of a Silverlight Q1 release?

We have an application using the RadScheduler and need to use features from RadScheduleView. Is the detailed conversion document mentioned in your blog available? I installed Q3 2010 and cant find any mention of this conversion method. In particular Timeslot use in our application creates undefined references. It would be helpful to understand an overview of this process as I am new to our controls.

Thanks

Dear Valery,

I'd like to know if a migration guide is available to outline the steps needed to upgrade from the RadScheduler to the RadSCheduleView control. Such a checklist would be very helpful to us !
I've read in one post in the Telerik forums that such document was going to be released this week, but I couldn't find any other updated information about this.

Could you please provide any news ?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

Massimiliano Giustizieri, Italy.
